Charges

According to the communiqué, Mr. Lotfi was charged with “having contacts with Soleiman Sheikheh; being an agent of the traitorous Salarjaf and recruiting individuals to sabotage networks in Iran; receiving training in sabotage and bomb-planting in Sulaymaniyah in Iraq under the supervision of the Intelligence Agency of the Iraqi Zionist Ba’ath regime; receiving sabotage and bomb-planting plans in Iran; receiving explosives from Saddam’s regime and transporting them from Sulaymaniyah in Iraq to Mahabad in Iran while being assisted by the mercenaries in the Iraq Ba’ath’s Intelligence Agency… receiving a large amount of sum in Iraqi dinar from the mercenaries of the Ba’ath regime in exchange for transferring explosives to Iran for their ominous plans.”

The validity of the criminal charges brought against this defendant cannot be ascertained in the absence of the basic guarantees of a fair trial. International human rights organizations have drawn attention to reports indicating that the Islamic Republic’s authorities have brought trumped-up charges against their political opponents and executed them for drug trafficking, sexual, and other criminal offences. Each year, Iranian authorities sentence to death hundreds of alleged common criminals, following judicial processes that fail to meet international standards. The exact number of people convicted based on trumped-up charges is unknown.
