About this Case

Mr. Mehran Shahabeddin is among the 282 individuals listed in a United Nations Report on The Situation of Human Right in the Islamic Republic of Iran (Note by the Secretary General), published on 13 November 1985. The report lists these individuals as "Persons who were allegedly summarily and arbitrarily executed in the Islamic Republic of Iran: 1984-1985." He is also one of the 12028 individuals listed in an addendum to the Mojahed magazine (No 261), published by Mojahedin Khalq Organization on September 6, 1985. The list includes individuals, affiliated with various opposition groups, who were executed or killed during clashes with the Islamic Republic security forces from June 1981 to the publication date of the magazine. Mr. Shahabeddin was born in Shahmirzad. He was a Medical student in Tehran University when he was arrested for his connection to the Fadaiyan Khalq Organization in 1972. He was condemned to ten years imprisonment. He was released in 1978 and a few months later, he became one of the founders of the Revolutionary Workers Organization of Iran and a member of the Political Bureau. His wife (Parvin Goli Abkenari) and his brother-in-law (Ruzbeh Goli Abkenari) were also executed

"Rah-e Kargar" or the "Revolutionary Workers Organization of Iran" was established in the summer of 1979. The Organization was founded by individuals from various leftist groups who had rejected the idea of armed struggle and believed in political action. They introduced themselves as Marxist-Leninists, promoting a socialist revolution and the leadership of the proletariat. They differed with the pro-Soviet communist party, Tudeh, in that they opposed the Islamic Republic and Ayatollah Khomeini's leadership.
