Lawyers Association Honors Iranian Rights Activist
The American Society of International Law has honored Roya Boroumand, the executive director of the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran, or ABC, with the 2024 Goler T. Butcher Medal.
Boroumand was saluted for her “dedication to promoting human rights and democracy in Iran,” according to an announcement on the center’s Instagram page.
The prestigious award recognizes the ABC director's "commitment to the rigorous, objective documentation of human rights violations in the service of justice and accountability under international law," the announcement said.
The medal is named after Goler T. Butcher, the distinguished African American scholar and Howard Law School international law professor, who served as assistant administrator for Africa at the U.S. Agency for International Development and was a leading advocate for ending global hunger.
Since 1997, the American Society of International Law has given the Butcher Medal to distinguished individuals for their "outstanding contributions to the development or effective realization of international human rights."
The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center is a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of human rights and democracy in Iran. It was founded to ensure that human rights in Iran are promoted and protected without discrimination.
Following the assassination of Abdorrahman Boroumand in Paris, his daughters, Roya and Ladan Boroumand, founded ABC.
Abdorrahman Boroumand, an Iranian political activist and leader of the executive committee of the National Movement of the Iranian Resistance, was assassinated on April 18, 1991. He was fatally stabbed in the lobby of his Paris apartment.
