Public Flogging in Ahvaz: Man Accused of Theft Given 74 Lashes

The public flogging sentence of a defendant previously sentenced to jail time and flogging for the charge of theft was carried out yesterday in a public square in the city of Ahvaz. Iran is one of the few countries which continues to make use of degrading punishments even though the International Covenant on Civil and Political rights explicitly prohibits punishments like flogging which violate human dignity.

According to HRANA News Agency, news division of Human Rights Activists in Iran, a persona accused of theft was flogged in Ahvaz on July 4, 2019.

The individual was formerly sentenced to four years of ta’zir imprisonment of 74 lashes in public by Branch 115 of Ahvaz Criminal for the charge of theft. The flogging sentence was implemented by Branch 7 of the Sentence Implementation Division of the Ministry of Justice office in the city presided over by Judge Qaruni.

At the time this story was prepared, the identity of the individual for whom the flogging sentence was implemented was not ascertained.

It bears mentioning that Iran is one of the few countries which continues to make use of degrading punishments even though the International Covenant on Civil and Political rights explicitly prohibits punishments like flogging which violate human dignity.
