Flogging of a Political Activist in Tehran: Somayeh Tohidlu Received 50 Lashes for Participation in the Musavi Campaign for Election

"According to JARAS (Jonbeshe Rahe Sabz), Somayeh Tohidlu, born in 1978 and a PhD student of Sociology in Tehran University, was transferred to the Evin prison yesterday [September 14, 2011]. The lash ruling was carried out while her hands and feet were chained.

Somayeh Tohidlu was an activist in Musavi's campaign who organized and planned the creation of a human chain between Rahahan Square and Tajrish [before the presidential election of 2009].

She was released on bail and condemned to one year imprisonment and 50 lashes. According to JARAS, her one year sentence had been pardoned but the lashing against this PhD student of Sociology was carried out by a male interrogator yesterday.

She was a member of the Central Council of the Islamic Association of Technical Faculty in Tehran University from 1997 to 2001, a member of the Central Council of the Islamic Association of Tehran University, a PhD student of Sociology in Tehran University, and a blogger for Bar-Sahele- Salamat. Tohidlu was an active member of Mirhossein Musavi's campaign during the presidential election, who was arrested the day after the election."
