Protesting the Unjust Purging of the Judicial System

A Number of Judges and Legal Experts / Translation by ABC

December 31, 1979
Letter

Several attorneys at law and judges sent a letter to Kayhan Newspaper protesting “the firing of a number of prominent and reputable judges and attorneys under the pretext of being members of the SAVAK (the Shah’s secret police)”, condemning such acts of pinning labels on individuals that have become customary these days, and stating that such actions are contrary to the wishes of the Leader of the Revolution.

"The Council of the Revolution’s decision in purging various departments has become a pretext for certain opportunists who pretend to be revolutionaries for showing off and settling personal scores"

A passage of the letter reads: “the Council of the Revolution’s decision in purging various departments [of unwanted anti-revolutionary elements] that was started a while ago, has become a pretext for certain opportunists who pretend to be revolutionaries for showing off and settling personal scores. A short time ago, the Ministry of Justice and the Bar Association suspended a number of prominent, reputable, and honorable judges and attorneys who had fought [for the revolution] under the pretext of purging the judiciary, solely based on a list of individuals ostensibly connected to the SAVAK, without due process and without examination of documentation and evidence, whereas, said Ministry’s communique regarding Mr. Asadollah Mobasheri and several others, explains that the reason the names of those individuals is on the list is because of their fight against the previous regime; it has now been established that simply because a certain name is contained in that list is not evidence of connection to or cooperation of that person with the SAVAK.”
